Critical Mass Games To Cease Trading
JBR here with bad news.
Critical Mass Games has announced that they are leaving the business, and are accepting offers for their inventory and intellectual property. Per their website news page...
---------
Well it is with some sadness that we are announcing Critical Mass Games will cease trading on April 2nd 2017. Both Dale and I who own and run Critical Mass Games have reached a point where our personal commitments are no longer compatible with running this enterprise with the passion and time it needs.
The 15mm Sci-fi community has show great support and loyalty since CMG came into being 10 years ago, and we are eternally grateful for the support you have shown.
In the coming weeks/months we hope to find a new home for the CMG product ranges so they can still be enjoyed.
Anyone wanting to enquire should contact cmgsales@criticalmassgames.com
In the interim the 15% sale on the site shall continue until the CMG store is decommissioned on April 2nd 2017.
As part of this, and to manage down our stock levels, infantry platoon packs and vehicle platoon packs will be removed from the web store on Sunday 19th March 2017.
Craig @ CMG
--------
So, it's grim tidings. Get what you can, while you can, for a discount.
The final curtain falls on April 2, 2017.
Craig and Dale are good people, and I wish them well.
Best,
John Bear Ross

PART 2A - KAAMADOS FORCE COMPOSITION
By Paul
Greetings. My name is Paul, and I am the Kaamados player for
this whole sheebang. I run the Metal Skirmish blog (http://metal-skirmish.blogspot.com)
in my spare time when I am avoiding painting.
Many moons back, when I was getting into 15mm scifi, I
picked up a couple Kaamados packs, because they looked cool. Fast forward to
when Aaron was looking into getting the game. I figure, sure, I will pick up a
copy, and grab a platoon deal, for if and when we actually get our toys on the
table. (Again, I am mostly picking what I would like to play based on how it
looks.) And then I tossed on a couple more packs when the ZAS kickstarter
rolled through.
Now that I have read the rules, more or less, I may have
lucked into something decent. Looking at an Agaamid platoon, backed by a few
Draco Aganath Imperator battlesuits and some Naga troops. I'm hoping the
Dragamaa Heavy Tank is as scary as it looks, and will keep enemy walkers busy.
And I am leaning towards having the commander in a Gekotaa armored car, but I
am still a little up in the air about that. Either way, should pack a solid
punch with some staying power to help dominate the table.
As you see in the above picture, painting-wise I have my
work cut out for me. I've never been into multiple figs per base, so this
challenge will help keep my nose to the grindstone. I have most of a color
scheme in mind, should be relatively easy to accomplish, just have to come up
with some compelling details to make them really work on the battlefield. We'll
see.

The Road to Gencon 2014
PART TWO - PROTOLENE FORCE COMPOSITION
By Aaron
Hi! I’m Aaron and I’ll be bringing you the glorious forces of the mighty Protolene Khanate Empire.
I’m planning on running a Scout force, so the natural starting
part is the Scout Great Khan. This unit is the starting point for my force and
requires me to field from three to five Scout units. I can take other
Ghul-Khans (sub-commander) of either the Hunter, Predator or Scout class if I
want some of those units (or more Scouts).

Protolene Scout Khans, Photo courtesy of Critical Mass Games, www.criticalmassgames.com
For this force, I’m going to stay Scout-pure. We haven’t played
this game yet, so I don’t have a sense for how the different units will
interact or what the strengths and weaknesses of each are.
Along with my Great Khan (45 points), I’ll add in two Scout Ayame with Communications modules (80 points each). These light mechs will help me generate extra communication points each round as well as provide some firepower. I could mount the Great Khan in an Ayame, but I’m going to leave him on-foot for this list.

Mass Games, www.criticalmassgames.com

A Scout Sharp Shooter pack will compliment the main infantry
body and provide some longer-range fire support. This is a 5-base strong unit
(160 points).

Light support will come in the form of three Scout Ayame
walkers. These will provide close escort to the infantry to deal with other
light vehicles the infantry encounter (195 points).

For a heavy punch, I’ll take two Scout Marrok medium walkers (240 points).

Finally, for both transport to move the scouts a bit faster
across the board and for heavy fire support, I’ll be bringing two Fenrir Heavy
Assault Walkers. These behemoths will rule the battlefield and provide a strong
focal point or distraction for enemy players (260 points).

These units are how I envision this force progressing for
Gencon. It should be fairly straight-forward but provide some options to deal
with any situation.

Review - Critical Mass Games Bastion IFV and Havoc Tank
Written by Chris
Last year, Critical Mass Games added an assortment of ten armored fighting vehicles to their great Mercenaries range. Craig sent me review samples of each variant back around the holidays, so it's high time I share these with you. We'll start with the Bastion IFV (tracked variant) and the Havoc Tank (grav variant). This seems like the perfect time to show these off - they are featured prominently in the ZAS Army Expansion currently running on Kickstarter.

Critical Mass Games announces Kickstarter for ZAS Army
Big news today, everyone. Critical Mass Games has launched a Kickstarter campaign to expand the popular ZAS Mercenary pack into a complete, standalone army. If you don't recognize them by name, the ZAS Mercs are the very same figures in the Dropship Horizon banner image.
For those who aren't familiar with Kickstarter, the process is simple. You contribute a "pledge" to the project, and that "pledge" equals a pre-order of the items in that project. Once the initial goal is financed, additional goals are added. If you pledge to a level that gets fully funded - you will receive that item once it enters production. If you pledge at a level that doesn't make its funding goal - your credit card will never be charged for that item. Kickstarter is a great way for small-scale operations (such as the entire 15mm manufacturing community!) to finance their sculptors, 3d prototyping, casting, and painting services without a major investment. And it's risk-free for us, since unfunded goals will never get charged.
For the ZAS Kickstarter, here's a quick overview of the initial offerings.
- Squad Leader (£8) - 12 ZAS Figures divided into two fire-teams. Each team consists of a rifle-armed leader, three rifle-armed troopers, a squad support weapon, and a special weapon.
- Platoon Leader (£18) 28 ZAS figures including a platoon commander, comms specialist, medic, and drone, plus four 6-man fire teams.
- Company Commander (£33) - 57 ZAS figures including a company commander, two platoon commanders, two comms specialists, two medics, two drones, and eight 6-man fire teams.
- Mechanised Infantry Commander (£85). Everything from the Company Commander pledge, with the addition of four of the existing Bastion IFVs and three Havoc tanks - grav or tracked. I'll be reviewing these vehicles next week to help support the campaign.
There are more options available, including forces that are expertly painted by Craig and Dale. Each of the above pledges includes shipping, and will include "stretch goals" such as heavy weapon and mortar teams as they are unlocked.
For full details of the pledge levels and stretch goals, along with concept art taking the ZAS from a small team of mercs to a fully-fledged army, visit the Kickstarter page by clicking here.
Cheers,
Chris

Review - Critical Mass Games Star Marines
Critical Mass Games added the Star Marines to the Mercenary range a little while ago, and Craig kindly sent me two packs for review (along with a ton of the newer Mercenary vehicles - coming soon!). I was pretty excited when they were first released. Just from looking at the catalog photo...
...I could tell these were going to be some nice, bulky figures with thick armor and awesome shoulderpads. Since I have an odd tendency to paint figures in football team colors, these should have been a dream come true. In full (and somewhat embarrassing) disclosure, I didn't immediately recognize their influencing design.
My initial opinion changed a bit when I first had them in-hand. I didn't like them as much as I did from the photo. The visored helmet looked great in the photo, but seemed hilariously undersized compared to other figures. There was something vaguely video-game like about them, but I still wasn't seeing it. While contemplating how to put them into service (robots, a headswap, etc), someone over at the Google Plus 15mm Sci Fi community dropped three words that immediately changed my opinion.... Starcraft Terran Marines.
Once I stopped smacking myself in the head, I knew just what I was seeing. The human operator's torso is recessed, with bottom of the figure's visor at roughly nose level. When I compared it to slender-ish figures (like Critical Mass ARC Recon and Oddzial Osmy NVL), the armor's proportions worked almost perfectly. So, with the new image in my mind, I wondered how to give these a paint scheme that fit their video-game nature. Well, what about washed silver metallic with solid-color accents?
Just what I had in mind - simple to apply, and it did a good job of showing off the details. And there are loads of details to be found. There were no corners cut when these were sculpted - caps on the toes and heels of the boots, extended plates covering the knees and elbows, perfectly proportioned fingers holding the weapons with realistic grips, and nice greeblies on the back, chest, and outer shoulders. A skilled painter could spend hours on these, picking out the individual components. And the castings are excellent. A couple figures had some flash between the upper thighs - easily removed with a hobby knife. And a few did have a noticeable mold line across the top, but it was easily cleaned and didn't cut across the visor (one of my biggest complaints with other visored figure ranges). I only have one real gripe with these figures - the cast base is about 2.5mm thick, and I learned that the pewter Critical Mass Games uses doesn't file as easily as some others. So my Star Marines sit noticeably high on their bases. But I do know that thicker bases help keep the castings cleaner, so it's a trade-off I'm happy to live with.
There's good variety among the five poses. But for now, all we have are the rifle poses. If these prove to be successful, hopefully we can talk Craig and Dale into adding another pack or two. These would definitely benefit from heavy and support weapons as well as a command figure or two. I could see these being fielded as complete armies with those additional figures. But as it is now, they are great additions to larger forces or good for smaller skirmish games. Especially, in my mind, skirmishes fought in starship interiors. Which inspired me to try a secondary color scheme before painting the rest:
I decided to paint a "red team" and a "blue team." That would give me some extra flexibility with them - they could be cooperative or competing protagonists in a game, racing against each other through rooms and corridors, slaughtering aliens and small automatons. Or, on a proper tabletop setting, one team could be hired as mercenaries for the attacker, while another team is hired by the defender.
The Star Marines compare pretty well to other 15mm Power Armor figures. Here they are with Critical Mass' own ARC Fleet Augments and with GZG NAC, Brigade Models PA, and Kremlin MANITOU. They look just as protected and lethal as any "equivalent" trooper they might encounter.
And they do stand out compared to non power armored infantry. They could have been just slightly larger for that instant "wow" effect, but it's quite clear that they have more armor than most fatigued 15mm figures. Here they are with a Critical Mass ARC Fleet Recon trooper, an Armies Army Rusk soldier, a Rebel Minis Homeguard trooper, and a Blue Moon Orion Republican.
And just for fun, here's the Red Team battling some Astagar Fighters aboard a Paper Make It Space Base. I can't think of a more suitable environment for the Star Marines.
Cheers,
Chris

New Releases from Critical Mass Games, Oddzial Osmy, and Khurasan Miniatures
Critical Mass Games has added the Star Marines their Mercenaries range.
I like the chunky look of these new figures - they're almost a cross between GZG NAC Power Armor and those cool armored robots on the Fox network during football games. Critical Mass also expanded the Mercenaries armored vehicles, adding the Warmonger tank, Vanquisher self-propelled artillery, and Hellfire AA tanks.
All three vehicles are available in Tracked (very useful for near-future games or low-tech factions) and Grav (advanced races/settings) variants.
* * * * *
The Oddzial Osmy New Vistula Legion, one of 15mm SF's most popular human factions, has been augmented by Long Range Recon Patrol pack. The LRRP team carries a good assortment of weapons and equipment, including a recon drone and large rucksacks for long-haul missions.
The LRRP pack is now available in the UK from Fighting 15s and in the US from Picoarmor.
* * * * *
Khurasan Miniatures has released the XM-6 Heavy Grav Tank for the Federal Army. Jon wrote up some nicely detailed background fluff for the XM-6 on his blog - definitely worth a read if you're a fan of his Federation Forward universe.
It's a big tank - 125mm long. This would make for a worthy opponent to the Topgun Marketing tanks (it even shares the orbital-deployment concept), and definitely has uses in settings like Traveller and Hammer's Slammers. It's also big enough to fit comfortably in a 20mm Sci Fi army, and could even be a light tank in 25mm/28mm games.

Clear Horizon (Part One) - Where It Came From
Attention dropship passengers!
Today we bring you something a little different.
For a while now, I've been following the posts on the
excellent blog "Clear Horizon"done by a gent named Harold and
featuring the build up, terrain, miniatures and paint work of he and his gaming
buddy as they build a 15mm scifi version of the Shadowrun universe. It's really
impressive and the level of detail and the tight, focused vision it represents
is very inspiring, so much so that I asked Harold if he would be kind enough to
author a guest feature describing where it came from, how it came together and
what he hopes to achieve with it.
This isn't intended to replace his blog posts, but really
was more of an attempt to gather together the thoughts and creative input and
commentary of someone who is really doing a bang-up job of show-casing what the
15mm scifi hobby is all about. What I got from him was a detailed, even
illustrated piece of work that was so big, I'll be splitting it into two parts,
just to do it justice.
Sooooo, anyhow, let's do this thing!
_______________________________________________________________________
Introduction
I’ve been gaming since I was 8 years old. I remember it well; I was in the B.Dalton
book store in the mall and saw the boxed Battletech set. I wanted that set for
months until my mother finally bought it for me. I poured over everything in the box set, the
miniatures, the rules, the backgrounds, and I found every piece of fiction to
expand the Battletech universe for me that I could.
I eventually decided the starter miniatures were not nearly
enough, and I had a new goal. I called a
couple of hobby stores in my area until I found one, The Game Zone, which
carried Battletech miniatures. I ended up spending much of my time there,
gaming, painting, etc.
I have such fond memories that while I haven’t played
Battletech in years, I still had to get the 25th anniversary set when it was
released.
While I don’t game Battletech, I’m quite active as these
days my scale of choice is 15mm, although I have the odd 10mm, 6mm, and, yes,
even 28mm sitting around. This hobby has
provided much enjoyment and brought me some of my best friends and even at
times employment (I was a “Red shirt” at GW for several summers and then a
“Black shirt” for a year). My most
recent project has been to build up some armies and an area to fight on for the
Gruntz rule set. I hope you find this article informative and not too rambling
as I’ll be going over my thought processes, what I felt I did right, and what I
ended up re-doing because I couldn’t make up my mind!
Rule Selection
Why did I choose Gruntz?
Well, to be fair it wasn’t the first choice I had. I had been playing Strange Aeons, Mordheim,
and 5150. I had also picked up the new
hard-cover Tomorrow’s War which I enjoy reading through, but I found a little
too dense for me.
I generally tend to gravitate towards “Necromunda”-type
games. I like being able to identify closely with the character my miniatures
represent. I had even spent some time
painting up quite a few character pieces in 15mm for a Shadowrun/5150 game I
was gearing up for.
Gruntz is a great match for me for a couple of reasons: It’s a fairly straightforward system with a
little bit of “crunch” to it and units are easy to understand and feel unique
without contradictory special rules and confusion.
The unit builders are great since anything that catches my
eye can easily be translated via profile cards into a working unit that I can
field. I really like that. Of course I can always use proxies and such
for other systems, but I like how much depth there are in the “unit builders”.
So, I went from small-scale gang skirmish to needing a
larger force. I wanted artillery strikes and tanks!
The bug had bitten me!
I think it was 12 feet tall and had acid for blood. Oh, and it had about 600 buddies. I needed an
army!
Miniature Selection
Through my “Shiny object” syndrome I actually had quite a
few military forces in 15mm. Federal Army forces from Khurasan Miniatures, NAC
from Ground Zero Games, Arc Fleet from Critical Mass Games, and several other
(including some really cool aliens from Micropanzer). My regular opponent decided to go with heavy
vac-suited Khurasan miniatures exterminators and to focus on mechs. This gave me a counterpoint to work with.

I had painted up my Arc fleet troopers in a bright yellow
already, so I decided to go for something new.
The NAC had always seemed really cool to me, but I didn’t really have a
clear vision of what colors to paint them and I just had a couple of squads.
Only troops does not an army make! I needed vehicles. I had started reading Hammer’s Slammers
(still getting through the second volume, good stuff!) and needed some GEV
(ground-effect-vehicles) (or Hover tanks for dolts like me who had no idea what
GEV stood for) tanks. I placed an order
and picked up some more rifle squads, some command troops and a couple of the
Gauntlet open-topped vehicles as “combat cars”.
I also picked up two Merka tanks from Rebel Minis since I needed some
bigger firepower to take out my opponents growing mech-based force.
Then the unexpected happened. Khurasan Miniatures did a limited
super-secret release of a VTOL called the Kestrel. I ordered two of them.
This transformed my mechanized cityfighting force into a
quick-strike air mobile contingent. I
modeled them after the 160th SOAR. I
just recently added two converted Halo Micro-Ops Falcons into the fray. The Kestrels are my “Littlebirds” and the
Falcons are the “Blackhawks.”
______________________________________________________________________
So, that conclude the first installment of the Clear Horizon
feature. I think you can already see that this project, like any good
miniatures project, is part inspiration, part shopping around to find the right
stuff, and a big part of it is just serendipity!
Tune in soon for part two where we'll get into paint schemes
and terrain choices.
Thanks Harold and thanks to all you DH passengers. We hope
you all enjoyed this, one of our first guest features, and look forward to
bringing you more of this sort in the future.

Critical Mass Mid-Summer Madness Sale, Cultists and Arid World Warriors
The Critical Mass boys have suffered from some moulds going adrift in the post. This is a double shame as 1) the moulds were for the Mercenary Mecha and 2) they came from the Forge Hall of John Bear Ross.
While efforts are being made to sort out this SNAFU, Critical Mass Games is pressing ahead with a Mid-Summer Madness Sale – 20% off everything from now until 22 July 2012. Along with this good news, comes the announcement that the Tamaska/Fenrir Heavy Walker is now available again, in a slightly remodelled form, to support the Protolene Khanate forces.
Meanwhile, over at 15mm.co.uk, a Cultist Command group is now available – either as a set or as individual figures – to provide some organisational oomph to your Gas lit Followers of the Elder Ones, Post-Apocalypse Survivalists or Science Fiction Spiritual Warriors.
Also new out from 15mm.co.uk, either as a pack of ten or individually, are the Arid World Warriors. Wearing robes and with their faces concealed by a wrap of their turbans, these figures could serve as desert allies or enemies from contemporary times on into the far future.
As usual, I have re-purposed images from the websites of Critical Mass Games and 15mm.co.uk to illustrate this news item. Go visit their websites if you like what you see.

Another Sale, some Mercenary Armour, and some Elder Things
![]() |
| 15mm Insolani from RAFM |
In a thread on TMP, Chief Lackey Rich pointed out that RAFM have just announced a 25% off sale.
Initially I wasn't able to find anything about this sale on the RAFM website and was wondering if I had misread Rich's post, until I realised that I needed to refresh my favourites list. That done, all was revealed on the RAFM homepage.
Now, I’ve already got sufficient Wolf Hounds of Sirius and Car Leonis Warriors, but I am certainly thinking seriously about the alien Insolani, and the Imp Armoured Car looks pretty tempting as well. Sale ends June 15th 2012.
![]() |
| The photo tags pretty much say it all - more excellent work from Critical Mass Games |
And if you happen to be in the St Helens area, just out of Liverpool, England, on Saturday 16 June, you should check out the Phalanx 2012 show hosted by the St Helen’s and Ashton Wargames Society. Critical Mass Games have been confirmed as attending, and also on the card are Ainsty Castings, Fighting 15’s, Irregular Miniatures, and Pendraken, as well as S & A Scenics, amongst many others.
![]() |
| Elder Things from Roebeast's Magical House of Sunshine |
The Elder Things are lovely models, standing 22 – 25mm tall. Assembly was relatively straight forward; though I’m glad I read Roebeast’s Elder Thing assembly instructions first. By bending the limb-flipper-things prior to sticking them onto the torso, I was able to get a nice, individualist feel to each of the models.
I’m not a huge Cthulu fan, but I really like these alien aliens – I’m thinking of using them as a methane-breathing race in my Traveller campaign – and I see today that Elder Things with Disruptor weapons will be available soon. I’ll be keeping an eye out for these (probably at the risk of my SAN).
