Zods,,,On the workbench

.
I've started cleaning up the first of GZG's new Zod Commandos (L-UNSC, pack#SG15-U20).

It occurred to me whilst handling the minis that the leader figure (2nd from left), could have his rifle tilted to the horizontal and left arm dropped to be firing from the hip "Commando style".

Ghost Recon in 15mm

.
My favourite video game remains the original, the best, Ghost Recon. I've always wanted to replay the missions in 15mm as Near Future/classic Traveller(Mercenary) Sci Fi and at last, with my X-Box out of commission, plus some excellent rules to use as a base (Ambush Alley and Force on Force:Tom.War) I finally have the impetus to get on and do it.

If you are unfamiliar with the genre, Ghost Recon is set in April 2008 (what was Near future, on it's initial release). Ultra-nationalists have seized power in Russia, with plans to rebuild the old Soviet Union. These Ultra-nationalists provide clandestine support for rebel factions in Georgia and the Baltic States.

Enter the 'Ghosts' - Special Forces operators from Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (5th SFG) stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Armed with advanced weaponry, the Ghost Recon force are covertly inserted into the area of operations and undetake three mini-campaigns (15 missions) set in Georgia, the Baltics and finally Moscow itself.

My favourite missions are:

2. Farm (Night)
4. Village (Day)
5. Embassy (Day)
6. Castle (Night)
8. Battlefield (Day - Overcast)
9. Swamp (Day-Overcast)
10. Ruined City (Day-Overcast)
12. Docks (Night)
15. Red Square (Day)

The missions are all there - I know what terrain to setup, where to place the 'hotspots', SwordWorlders replace the Ultra-nationalists and well, Mission 12. Docks can easily become a Frontier Starport. - it's all so do-able and can easily be transposed into a Traveller:Broadsword style campaign. But, I can also play it simultaneously or even back to back with Moderns/Mod-Future using AA or Force on Force.

So this morning I've been prepping a pack of Rebel Minis' 15mm US Special Forces to use as my 'Ghosts' (Item# 15mm-us-special-forc). Just as well the X-Box version of the game only has fireteams Alpha and Bravo, each with three men, as this is exactly the number of useable figs I got out of the pack.

The three helmeted guys with M4's are brilliant and make a nice 'stackable' team. Shame these are not available separately!!! Even as a 12 figure booster pack.

At least this mini project gives me an excuse to buy Rebels' Modern US Snipers, for those missions where only a sniper will do (Item# RMUSI3).

If I want to stick with canon, then I should look to QRF's resculpted Modern US previewed here on Dropship Horizon last month. There's plenty of room to mix and match plus throw in support from US Airborne or Rangers.

Course, nothing to say these Ghost Recon missions can't be replayed with Zod Commandos either! There's a lot of Sci Fi mileage in this. Easy to scale up too - 6 Operators become 6 Fire Teams or more, to suit the size of game you want to play.

GZG New Trooper: Zod Commando

.
Quick but effective paint job on Jon's new 15mm Sci Fi Trooper to represent my Zod Commandos.

Step 1. Painted the figure with black ink.

Step 2. Removed ink from all exposed surfaces.

Step 3. Washed with Citadel OOP Waaarg Green.

Step 4. Vallejo 'bright' Gold visor.

Step 5. Rifle painted black - grey highlights and then quick drybrush of Boltgun Metal.

Step 6. Sight recticle painted Scab Red, then White/Scab Red reflection highlight.

I tried to paint very light blue/green 'power' streams in the recesses on the barrel but was defeated by my ageing eyes :-(

I'm tempted to remove the paint from the knee pads, paint them steel or maybe yellow/black 'hazard' stripes (but I have to remember this is 15mm!). He definitely needs badges on his shoulder plates for a bit of colour though. So I've designed this Zod Commando Shield to be suitable for a 15mm figure.

I also intend placing him and his buddies on bases represents ship's/space station decking. Markings on the decking will add additional colour to the piece.

The shield is the unit badge of the Zod Double Epsilon Deep Strike Commando Company. They are chosen for hazardous missions of high strategic importance but with correspondingly lower probabilities of survival. The Company motto is:

"mev brord min alder skjelme"
My Brother is my Shield
