Army in a Day - GZG UNSC and Antenocitis Workshop Grav-Tank

By Harold

Hi everyone, I've had these GZG UNSC-L and the AW light grav tank for a while now and I wanted to be able to field them on the table top.  I figured I'd see how many I could get done in one night.

While not the highest quality, I'm really happy with how they turned out.

I have painted:

2x 8-man squads with 2 SAWs
2x 2-man heavy sniper rifles
1x Command squad (4)
1x Light grav tank

This would probably be between 100 and 150 points in gruntz, depending on how you costed them out.  It'd make a great recon or patrol platoon.

Light grav tank and squad advance through the grasslands.

New GZG - UNSC Hardsuits

Attention dropship passengers...

In today's news, UNSC Hardsuit Marines are on the move. Deploying to a conflict near you. Here's what their supreme commander Jon Tuffley had to say about them...

The long-awaited new sculpt UNSC Hardsuit Marines (UNSC/H) are NOW AVAILABLE! They are all up on the webstore and fully available.

OUT NOW:
(Inc. VAT prices apply to all customers in UK and other EU countries, ex VAT prices apply to all customers outside the EU.)

SG15-U10  UNSC/H Marines in Hardsuits - Plasma Rifles pack A (8 figs)
£3.00 inc VAT, £2.50 ex VAT.

SG15-U11  UNSC/H Marines in Hardsuits - Plasma Rifles pack B (8 figs)
£3.00 inc VAT, £2.50 ex VAT.

Laser Snipers (8 figs)  £3.00 inc VAT, £2.50 ex VAT.

SG15-UX       UNSC/H Grav Jump Packs to fit Marine Hardsuits - 24
backpacks               £3.00 inc VAT, £2.50 ex VAT.

The SG15-UX pack contains 24 individual grav-packs, designed to fit any of the Marine Hardsuit figures in packs U10-U13; each UX pack will therefore be enough to equip 3 packs of Hardsuit figures. In MOST cases the Grav-pack will simply glue on over the small cast-on backpack of the hardsuit - it has been designed to be a very quick and simple fit with a drop of superglue, and most figure poses will require no cutting, filing or other work to fit the grav-packs. There may be just a few cases where a little filing and fitting of the pack or the suit is required to make it sit correctly on the figure, depending on the pose of the arms and shoulders and the weapon that the figure is carrying, but we have tried to keep this to an absolute minimum. PLEASE NOTE that the picture shows examples of the grav packs fitted to several UNSC/H figures - the UX pack does NOT contain the figures themselves!
.................

SPECIAL OFFER!!!
We also have a little special offer intro deal, for a limited time only - by buying the deal you get enough grav packs for all the figures FREE!

UNSC/H "mini intro" deal pack: 2 x SG15-U10, 2 x SG15- U11, 1 x SG15- U12, 1 x SG15- U13  (total of 48 figures) plus two FREE packets of
SG15- UX grav packs!

Deal price £18.00 inc VAT, £15.00 ex VAT.

..................

Since the first sample figure of the new UNSC/H got previewed a few weeks ago, several people have commented on the major differences in weapons and equipment between the new UNSC/H and the UNSC/L Light Infantry - well, here's why....

The UNSC/L (Light) Infantry are the regular ground troops of the UNSC forces, under Army Ground Forces command; they are equipped to a fairly high tech level, using full-body light armour combat suits and carrying rapid-fire gauss weaponry (the IGW-68 infantry rifle and SGW-75 support weapon). The flexible combat suit gives the wearer reasonable protection against shrapnel and some small-arms fire; it is also fully sealed and has sufficient life-support for short term operation in hostile atmospheres, though for hard vacuum operations it is more common to deploy the Hardsuited Marines where available. The large overhead-curving faceplate of the combat helmet allows excellent optical vision, supplemented by head-up displays projected on the inner faceplate by the suit's sensors and comms links.

The UNSC/H (Hardsuit) Marines are a separate organisation completely, under UNSC Fleet command and used as a primary strike force, often dropping from orbit in individual ablative capsules or deploying via high altitude grav-pack drop from atmosphere-skimming transports. The UNSC Marines are equipped to the highest tech level available to any human infantry, each Marine wearing an advanced power- assisted combat hardsuit sealed against vacuum and most hostile environments, and carrying High Energy Weapons tech in the form of the IPW-80 Plasma Rifle and the SPW-82 Rapid-Fire Plasma SAW. The very distinctive bulbous helmet of the Marine hardsuit contains extensive sensor, comms and AI support for the wearer, with panoramic head-up displays for full situational awareness at all times - the narrow "visor" slit in the faceplate is normally protected by an internal armoured shield when the Marine is in combat conditions, and is usually opened for direct optical vision only when out of combat, or in emergency circumstances such as sensor equipment damage.

The Marines are considered the elite of the UNSC forces, highly trained in all combat situations including vacuum and microgravity environments, and there is certainly a strong inter-service rivalry between them and the regular UNSC light infantry - somewhat exacerbated by the fact that they are organised under completely separate command structures. As throughout history, this rivalry has lead to many a bar-fight when troops are off duty;  to the Marines, the Light Infantry are "just a bunch of dirt-grunts", best suited to the jobs of garrison duties, peacekeeping forces and the like; the Light Infantry, in their turn, see the Marines as "cocky glory-hogs with all the best toys", who "drop in, kill everything then bugger off to space again". In action, of course, all this is forgotten - it is not uncommon for Infantry and Marines units to be found fighting shoulder-to-shoulder, and even to be cross-attached to each others' units right down to platoon level when the situation warrants.

So, there we go - lots of you have asked for these, so we've done them!   :-)

GZG's new UNSC and hovertank

When I began thinking about my little Red Mars Rebellion project last year I started combing the internet for miniatures that I thought would fit the theme, and that I also found appealing from an aesthetic standpoint. For the Earth Sectorial Army (more on that later) I ended up choosing the new UNSC sculpts from GZG. They have a hi-tech yet realistic look that I like. Their transportation of choice is hovercraft so when GZG re-opened their webstore and released some new UNSC infantry packs and a new medium hovertank I got my credit card out! They arrived last week and I thought I'd share my thoughts on them with you all! I might have a slight bias since I'm currently helping Jon in getting some more pictures of painted miniatures into his webstore, but I think I should be able to keep my head straight nonetheless. Hehe!

First off the HAMR team. These two are my favourites of the new releases! Especially the sniper. The Heavy Anti-Materiel Rifle is huge and I would imagine poses a threat to anything smaller than a tank! He has a spotter beside him and it's a nice touch that the spotter's assault rifle is lying next to him on the ground (a recurrant theme in several of these new minis). They match each other very well and certainly has that  patient-sniper-team-of-death look to them. The sculpts are good, with enough details to make the minis interesting yet not too "greebly" and needing only minimal cleaning up. Generally they hold up well to what we've come to expect from GZG's newer releases. I woldn't have minded a little more detailing on the rifle, but that's a really minor nitpick. As you probably have understood by now I'm quite taken by these guys. They didn't look all that when I saw pictures of them, but now that I have them in front of me I'm eager to get playing with them! I've been thinking about a few different scenario possibilities centered around these snipers.
I'll put them at the end of the post for your perusal.

Then we have the GMS team. They are both lying prone, using the same basic positions as the HAMR team, with the loader seemingly prepping the next missile. They certainly look good, although not quite as eye-catching or suggestive as the sniper team. Given a choice I would have prefered a kneeling GMS operator but that is very much a question of personal taste. In my view prone models on the tabletop can look a bit... well, flat. However this is much more appearant when you have single models, and with teams like this it's much less of an issue for me. In fact, having two models allows me to experiment with a larger base size, and I like that! It's almost like building a mini diorama. I've decided to base my 15mm guys individually except for fire teams like these that go on 30mm bases.

The Command and Comms pack holds one standing comms operator, a kneeling soldier checking his iPad, a kneeling soldier looking through his binoculars (spotting Imperial walkers mayhap?) and finally a kneeling officer pointing his grunts forward. Again, the same sculpting quality as before. However, something that has me a bit confused are the rifles of the comms operator and officer Pointy. They look like the regular assault rifles but a fair bit smaller, especially the barrel. At first I thought something had went awry in casting and the barrel hadn't formed correctly, but the more I look at them the more I think they're supposed to be some kind of smaller carbine or submachine gun versions. Apart from that little mystery I quite like them, especially for their versatility! I actually bought two packs so I can sprinkle them around the platoon as different kinds of specialists. I know for sure that one will act as a spotter for my MicroPanzer Seekers (aka Warbots) and I think I might switch the prone spotter of one of the GMS teams for a kneeling one from this pack.

Finally the the Wittman tank! It is based on the same hull as the Rommel so no news there. It's pretty flat and sleek but it's also slightly on the small side and I believe you would find it rather cramped inside (come to think of it, I'd love to see some kind of larger, more massive hover MBT from GZG!). The new turret is nice and crisp with a good amount of detailing. It comes with a choice of three barrels and has a side mounted missile launcher as well. You get a crew member too, although the one I got was different from the one pictured in the store so I guess that might be random. I got a guy with a berret and binoculars instead of the one with fully enclosed helmet. Overall I think I prefer the Wittman to the other medium hovertank available from GZG and I will probably get one or two more later on.

Definitely some good stuff here! I'm always glad to see more UNSC and since I'm a recent hovertank convert  as well that was an added bonus. I got some APC's in the same order and I'm currently busy getting it all painted.

Here are my two sniper centered scenario ideas I mentioned earlier:

Scenario 1: A sniper team is in support of a small squad or two of infantry as they conduct some kind of a search and retrieve mission in a semi-hostile urban area. The snipers would be set up in hidden positions in the hills on the outskirts of town. The defender would have to try and trace where the shots are coming from to be able to attack the snipers which in turn would leave the squads in town unsupported and (hopefully) ripe for the picking.
Scenario 2: Sniper teams in a rear-guard action against a larger, but mostly infantry based, force. The snipers would be defending some kind of bottleneck like a bridge or a small ravine. In this kind of scenario things like suppresion and how to use it would become important as it's all about stalling the enemy. Perhaps the defender would win if he killed enough troops (demoralizing the enemy), or simply held out a set number of turns (buying time for the main force to re-position).

That's all from me for now. More later!

Zods,,,On the workbench

.
I've started cleaning up the first of GZG's new Zod Commandos (L-UNSC, pack#SG15-U20).

It occurred to me whilst handling the minis that the leader figure (2nd from left), could have his rifle tilted to the horizontal and left arm dropped to be firing from the hip "Commando style".

15mm GARN: Close Up and Personal

One of the most anticipated releases of the year, Khurasan Miniatures 15mm Sci Fi Garn Warriors will not fail to disappoint. I suspect these new miniatures will become THE alien scumbags of choice amongst the 15mm Sci Fi gaming community.

15mm Khurasan Miniatures
Garn Warriors

Front and rear views of the Garn. Note that these miniatures do not have their weapons attached yet. All figures are sculpted as firing from the hip. The weapons come on a separate sprue and have a small spigot which fits into the hole you can see on the central figure. Take notice that the magazine is already moulded grasped in the right claw.

15mm Garn: L-R: Heavy Weapons trooper and 2 Warriors

The Heavy Weapons trooper comes with a sprue of different weapon 'inserts' which fit beneath the bar you see on the left-hand Garn in the photo above. You can cut off this spigot and paint it as a sword or similar close combat weapon.

15mm Khurasan Miniatures Garn Warriors
Comparisons with other manufacturer's human miniatures

This photo illustrates how solid and powerfully built Garn warriors are compared to humans, yet they do not look 'oversized' , or out of scale in any way. Playing around with the unpainted miniatures, I placed two on a base with the Rebel Earth Force Marine and they looked like a cool mixed species 'mercenary' unit.

The detail on the figures speaks for itself. I particularly like the prominent 'brow' feature above the eyes as it adds both 'menace' and character to the individual Garn models. These are minis you can easily develop empathy for and will want to command on the tabletop as your primary 15mm Sci Fi force - perfect for the upcoming AMBUSH ALLEY Sci Fi variant.

Remember to click on the photos for larger images!
