INCOMING......Arc Fleet Heavy Weapons

.
Next releases from Critical Mass Games are Heavy Weapons for the Arc Fleet Light Recon and heavily armoured Augmented Foot Troops.

 15mm Sci Fi: AFAU3: 6 figures, 3 poses for £3.70

15mm Sci Fi: AFAU4: 6 figures, 3 poses for £3.70

15mm Sci Fi: AFLR5: 8 figures, 3 poses for £3.70

15mm Sci Fi: AFALR: 8 figures, 3 poses for £3.70

Whilst for me it's Recon, all the way! The Augments are impressive figures. With this release we now have some much anticipated man portable firepower on the tabletop.Me, I like them as troopers with BFGs in their own right.

House Antigonus: Tiger Scouts

.
Wednesday was not a normal day. I began in the morning taking part in a conference call/webinar from my study at home and ended the day in hospital having a chest X-Ray.

I'm OK, but the result being a couple of days off under doctor's supervision. Best will in the world looks like I'll miss Carronade at Falkirk tomorrow, where I was hoping to meet up with Craig and Dale at Critical Mass Games and take part in the Kyushu Bay game.

Still, painting Critical Mass figures is chicken soup for the soul. A platoon of these with bot support for Tom. War plus cleaning and building five GZG Light Gun & Scout Sleds keeping me busy.

If I haven't said it before, the Critical Mass Light Recon are a joy to paint - crisp detail, clean castings, no mould seams, flash or rough spots - I'm glad that Craig and Dale chose to expand the Light Recon range with support weapon troopers, available towards the end of the summer. I'm really looking forward to these as they will make the range 'pop'! I'm thinking that I might get some packs to be a discrete Commando unit in their own right.

I do still think the Light Recon need a pack of command/leader figures but having said that, in my games these guys are fully netted into the command grid - each member of the team receiving his own personal AI leadership and direction through his earpiece/displayed on his faceplate.

'O' GROUP.......Light Recon Orbats for FWC

.

Took some time out yesterday to organise my first batch of Critical Mass Light Recon figures for Future War Commander.

(Arid/Desert scheme)

This force will be a High tech company. I've decided that these troops have AI integral to their unit structure, so each base will have two Light Recon figures and a human-sized armed AI walker.

I tried out several different AI walker miniatures with the Light Recon figures, including GMM-42 Medium Mecha Units from GZG’s 2mm range. When combined with infantry on the same base the walkers really do make a bold "Sci Fi" statement!

Because of the additional firepower inherent within each platoon, I'm aiming at 4 bases per platoon and 2 platoons to the company. I don't think it would be unreasonable to have 2 smaller but powerful companies rather than a single 4 platoon monster.

(Mountain/Snow scheme)

Organised in a similar fashion to the above, but with only one base of AI walkers per platoon. They will be supported by GZG Palladin Tanks.

(French Camo scheme)

This time, a generic 'light' company with 3 figures to a base, 3 bases to a platoon and 3 platoons to the company. They will be supported by a heavy platoon of 3 GZG Wheeled MAWPs and 3 GZG UAVs.

The Light Recon miniatures within each platoon will be based as follows: ‘Scout’ base (including sniper), ‘Support’ base (including rocket launcher) and ‘Assault’ base (figs in assault poses).

Finally but not least....
Fleet Recon

A recon platoon of 2 Old Crow Grav Outrider Scout Cars (with GZG missile pod upgrades), 2 'ultra' recon bases of converted Light Recon figures and 4 GZG UAVs.

Arc Fleet Ultra Recon

.
On getting home from work I checked out last nights work. So, how do the Augmented Battle Suits look to fresh eyes this evening? Well, let's just say I'm basking in my self appointed awesomeness.

Onto other things......have you seen, Rebel Minis 15mm Modern Spy (item code: 15mm-modern-s)? Straight out of Splinter Cell n'est pas? Lovely miniature scuplted by Rod Campbell. The night vision goggles are particularly well executed.

I happened to be playing around with some CMG miniatures earlier to see if I could enhance enhance the number of poses using existing figures. 'Cut and shunts' mostly, you know, this torso on that pair of legs.

By accident I picked up an errant pack of Rebel Mini's Modern Spies which was lurking in the vicinity of my CMG Light Recon haul. Holding up the Rebel figs to the Light Recon I could see immediately that they were very close in height and build. Better still, the heads would easily match the Light Recon bodies.

What this means is that you can easily utilise the Rebel Modern Spies as Secret or Special Forces Operatives for your Arc Fleet figures.

Taking this idea further, I could easily swop several Recon Trooper heads for those from the Modern Spies, to give me 'Ultra' Stealth Recon Troopers.....

Critical Mass Games: 15mm Light Recon Troopers

.
We've heard about them, talked about them, we've seen the concept art and followed the WIP. But, what are the Critical Mass Games' Arc Fleet miniatures like in your hand?

I'm not going to flannel you or try and fluff up the minis with superlatives, so let's get down to what you really want to know about the figures.

BACKGROUND

CMG's initial release includes 4 packs of Arc Fleet Light Recon Troopers (AFLR1-4). It's important to recognise at this time that the Light Recon are part of a much larger Arc Fleet range and not designed as a distinct stand alone range in their own right. Craig's concept of them is for the Light Recon to be inserted well away from the main area of operations and infiltrate ahead of main assaul by the Drop Troopers. In combat they will act as a forward screen, protect the flanks and generally be the eyes and ears - on the ground - for the Arc Fleet's main dirtside forces. Additional firepower where required will be provided by these heavier forces.

DESCRIPTION

The Light Recon Troopers are partially armoured miniatures that could pass as anything from Near Future 'Ghost Recon' to Far Future Mid-Tech main force infantry, para-military and police forces. With recent news reports suggesting we will be in Afghanistan for the next 40 years, the Light Recon would not be out of place in your 'Modern' encounters if painted to represent US MARPAT camo or similar.

They wear full face, visored helmets, and light armour which cover their torso and shoulders. Further pads or armour plate are on their knees and elbows. All troops in packs AFLR 1-3 are armed with a Gauss Carbine.

Light Recon Concept Artwork

The Light Recon Troopers are very close to the concept artwork. The amount of fine detail on the miniatures cries out for a wash technique which will give stunning results in quick order.

PACKAGING

Each pack contains eight miniatures for £3.20. Packs AFLR1-3 have 3 different sculpts with a minimum of 2 of each sculpt. The remaining figs included in the pack are randomised. Pack AFLR4 (Missile Launchers and Sniper Rifles) has 2 each of four distinct sculpts.

COMPATABILITY

The Light Recon minis themselves vary subtly in height and build. The largest standing figure from sole of boot to top of helmet is 18mm. Boot to eye level is 16mm. They have a slender 'true' human build which is extenuated by their very much in scale, armour. Limbs, head, body is all very much correctly proportioned and there's something very natural about the poses. Utilising the Barrett Measurements System, I'd say 16.5L would be a truer reflection of size and 'heft'.

The $64,000 question is will they fit in with your other minis? The answer, and I have considered this very carefully, is "mostly". You have to remember these figures are towards the taller end of the scale. They match Khurasan's Corporate Marines, GZG's Ravagers, HOF Crusaders and Mechanoids, slightly taller than Rebel Minis Earth Force Marines, but not uncomfortably so. However, the Recon Troopers dwarf RAFM ex-Citadel and many Laserburn miniatures.

Photos will be added when I sort my USB port problem.

OPINION

I am completely enamoured with these minis. I'm even more impressed seeing them for real than in the photos I've been working from up to now. The sculpting is both naturalistic and in scale. There is an element of HALO ODST about them, or as some have suggested STARSHIP TROOPERS: The Miniatures Game. It's definitely the ODST look which attracts me to these minis, plus their sleek, natural look and humanistic proportions.

Let's be clear though, my current Sci Fi collection has not been made redundant overnight. The Light Recon Troopers don't quite push all my buttons. The two standing poses in AFLR 3 are nice figs in their own right but simply don't hang with the rest of the combative poses within the Light Recon range. Similarly with the standing sniper from pack AFLR4. Nice fig but he's a sniper! He should be advancing to a new position, pressed against cover searching for a new target or firing. But those are my own personal foibles.

For some Ambush Alley, FOF or Stargrunt squad/platoon level gamers, the one small downside to the Light Recon is that they may not able to stand on their own as a discrete range due to a lack of squad/platoon level automatic support weapons without importing figures from the forthcoming Arc Fleet Standard Rifle Infantry.

SUMMARY

Critical Mass Games have raised the bar for 15mm Sci Fi miniature design and sculpting with these new Arc Fleet Light Recon Troopers. They won't meet all tastes. For instance, the minis lack the gritty character, sheer range and versatility provided by GZG's resculpted and expanded selection of NAC Marines. But as I mentioned in the background above, they weren't meant to, being instead one part of an integrated force of miniatures upon whom they can call for support.

The lack of a SAW is not really an insurmountable problem. I go with the Master Chef's assertion that the power of the Gauss Carbine effectively gives every man a SAW. We presume the Recon's Gauss carbine to be an OICW with the capability to fire programmable and targetable mini grenades on command. It might potentially act as a short range laser designator too.

CMG's Light Recon Troopers, with their nod to HALO's ODST are my futuristic human infantry of choice. So, all I need now are some decent 'Brutes'!

PREVIEW Critical Mass Games: Light Recon Troopers

.
You can scan from orbit, you can send in remotes, but when you positively, absolutely have to get intel on the deepest command post or from inside the most hardened bunker, there's nothing surer than the Mk1 eyeball behind a protosplas visor.

I'm delighted to be able to share with you concept artwork and W.I.P. illustrations of CRITICAL MASS GAMES forthcoming Arc Fleet Light Recon Troopers.

Four packs of Light Recon Troopers (codes AFLR1-4), including command and squad support weapons, are planned to be included in Critical Mass Games' initial release.

The photo below of WIP dollies provides a good illustration of the differences between the Light Recon Trooper (left) and the standard Arc Fleet Rifle Infantry (right).

So, how does the execution live up to the concept? Judge for yourself......

CMG 15mm Arc Fleet
Light Recon Trooper (Pack AFLR2)

I've been quietly play testing Ambush Alley's Force on Force Sci Fi rules over the past couple of months. These Light Recon Troopers from CMG simply ARE the minis conjured in my mind's eye every time I pick up the the rules.

I can easily see them as near future Advanced Warfighters or futuristic police forces, in addition to their intended classic military Sci Fi roles.
