QRF 15mm Panther CLV - post apocalypse run around

You'll remember that earlier in the week I ordered some new 15mm Modern releases from QRF. This included a Panther CLV (code MBRV04) to use as a post apocalyptic 'survivalist' wagon (more intel here).

The vehicle itself is very nice and looks 'right'. The body is cast in a single piece of resin (49mm x 20mm). No bubbles or sink holes that I can see. It sits on a metal chassis and has metal detailing for you to add. All well cast.

One word of caution about QRF models. They tend to be very true to scale - this means that weapon barrels and smaller parts are very fine.

The plan at the moment is to distress the vehicle, add some additional bedrolls and kit but otherwise leave as is. I'll buy a second one in the future to 'Zombiefy' a bit more fully.

The comparison miniature is from pack MBI12: Modern British patrolling in berets. Nice 15mm British command figure. The others in the pack are in a mix of patrolling and covering poses. I'm going to change the berets worn into bareheads and wooly hats. Some of the kit will have to come off too. The idea being to turn the figures into heavily armed British 'survivalists' rather than military in this instance for a full UK retread of Undead States of America. Might even start this as a quick evening project next week.

Mad Mark: A90 Road Warrior

Placed an order with QRF for some of their new 15mm Modern releases. I included one of these Panther CLVs (code MBRV04) which I see being a very useful 'survivalist' vehicle in a wide range of post apoc' settings.

If Ali Larter was my co-driver when the rest of the world had turned Zombie - bring on the apocalypse!

Seriously, I'm looking at options for my survivalists - many of the QRF Modern Brits look decently post apoc - in that enduring British Tom 'shabby' chic sort of way. I especially want to have a more 'British' take on the apocalypse - "I say, would you care for another Zombie, Vicar?".

I'll take the helmets off and give them Peter Pig or similar heads. Wooly hats from Green Stuff being de rigeur. I'm thinking of a mix of Desert and Temperate DPM cammies - plus the odd donkey jacket and Council workman florescent waistcoat (regardless of the Apocalypse there's always time for health & safety!).

Being as it's a "Very British Apocalypse" should I set my sights appropriately and cast a British actress as my co-driver? In which case, who is attractive enough to give me a reason to want to survive the apocalypse and yet be handy enough with an SA80, Heckler & Koch or even trusty old 12 bore? No 'A' listers, or Hollywood squatters - so, Thandi Newton, Saffron Burrows, Anna Friel?

15mm Mid Tech Proxies from QRF

A heads up guys that LKM/QRF have just released some nice looking 15mm Modern Germans that will make excellent Mid-tech Infantry proxies, and once more, won't simply look like Modern US. Of course, I'll need to add some visors first ;-)

Modern French and Chinese are on the way too. Corresponding with Geoff, the French will be in the new FRELIM kit. I'm hoping they will make OUDF proxies without the McStarburger 'Royale' look.

There's also more in the way of Modern Brits: - Snipers, GMG, Javelin teams, underslung grenade launchers, command, plus a heap of support weapons including a ground mounted 40mm auto-grenade launcher. If you are not too fussy, some mix and match of the support weapons with the Modern German infantry is possible for a discrete Tom. War force.

Of course, the great thing about the Modern Germans is their Flecktarn camo! Pure Sci Fi, and comes in desert and urban varieties too.

It's worth scanning the QRF catalogue for 'different' Modern kit to equip your Mid-Tech forces. The Yugoslavian M80A MICV being a great example. It's a BMP, but it's not.

Both Master Chef and myself use the Brazillian URUTU E11 APC as an off-world para-military police armoured vehicle. The French VAB wheeled APCs, US LAV-AT, plus South African Ratels are equally all worthy of including in your Mid-tech Sci Fi inventory.

Whilst on the subject of Mid-Tech Proxies, I ordered a pack of US Special Forces from Rebel Minis which arrived last weekend.

Lovely figs. Would have preferred leader types in helmets & in combative command poses, but I can work round that in this instance. Will certainly get more with my next order from Mike. Incidentally Master Chef uses these as 'Ships Marines' due to their resemblence to the Colonial Marines on Battlestar Galactica.

Kitbash of the Week No.4

GZG's latest 8 Wheeled MICV, V15-51A partially assembled on my painting board. It's a substantial model 70mm long, 35mm wide and approximately 35mm tall when fully assembled. About the same size as QRF's BTR80 APC.

I like the boxy light weapon turret (with gatling and missile pod) and have used it as the basis of my latest Kitbash of the Week. Maybe this week we should call this feature doodling with armour!


First up! My favourite tankette! Surely a film starring Daniel Day Lewis? In the photo above we find the MICV's light weapon turret matched to the QRF's MT05 AMX13 hull, which gives us some serious recon firepower! Though in FWC you might as well have two guys strapped to a Penny Farthing as your recce element! Never mind, this kitbash creates a nice Mid-tech fast tank suitable for jolly scrapes on newly colonised worlds.



In this photo, I've put the MICV's light weapon turret .in place of the gun system of GZG's V15-03A GunCrab quad walker. It's not a great fit, but it works better than the photo suggests. I am wondering though about the turret from GZG's V15-38A Tracked Heavy Fire Support Vehicle with Light AA cannon?

Whilst I had this spare GunCrab set up, I tried out the remote turret from GZG's V15-44A High-tech Grav Light APC/scout vehicle. Yeah, it works to a degree but is just too small for my personal liking. The Guncrabs are incredibly versatile pieces of kit and deserve more attention. It can fulfill a multitude of roles including remote or semi-autonomous weapons platform and even as an alien tank! More about them in later posts.

Kitbash of the Week No.3

This week, I've set myself the herculean task of painting a Cimmerian mercenary mech company in the employ of Turan (sans dismounts of course). So far, the vehicles, all Old Crow Models, have been cleaned, assembled, basecoated and drybrushed. Now I only have to decide on one of three favoured camo schemes. That's the hard part! We'll just have to see if I can pull off a clever geologically inspired paint job or whether it will look like the Rorschach inkblot doodlings of a colour blind, one eyed, drunken monkey.

Having said that, the Cimmerian rich and famous are finding that Rorschach inkblot doodlings by colour blind, one eyed, drunken monkies are retaining their value despite the recession, and so remain a necessary understatement of worth to be obsenely displayed on their dining room walls to guests similarly devoid of taste, perspective or validity.

With absolutely no bearing at all on this madness, here's another quick and easy 15mm Sci Fi kitbash. This time inspired by the first Tamiya 1/35th scale 'tank' I bought with my own pocket money as a teenager - the M42 'Duster'.

Have Gun Will Travel

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present...you can tell I've been on the sauce tonight....the M419 Hannam Sky Raptor. Applause please!

The hull is a QRF Modern French AMX13/90 tank. The 'turret' with rotary cannon is from GZG's V15-26A Manned Groundmount Weapons Platform with Rotary Cannon. And at only 760,000 adjusted credits, I'm sure you'll agree it's V.F.F. - "Value For Firepower!"

QRF 15mm Alien Bipeds

I have to say that I do like QRF's 15mm 'Alien Bipeds - Large'. Pack SF06 has three different miniatures which have animation lacking in GZG's SG15-X1. These are large, substantial and menacing figures, some 24mm to the top of the skull carapace of the tallest figure. You can see from the photo above, perfect for anyone looking at redecorating their spaceship corridors.
Pack SF05 'Alien Bipeds - Small' contains eight 12mm tall bipedal Alien Xenomorphs in two poses. These mix well with Pendraken Miniatures larger 10mm Alien miniatures and are best based in multiples as part of a 'Bug' or 'Hive Mind' army.

My own Alien Movies inspired 'Hive Mind' Army for Alien Squad Leader consists of:

8x Centurions (individually based QRF SF06 and GZG X1)
10x Warrior Bases (Pendraken and QRF SF05 based in 3's and 5's)

QRF also have a pack of 'Face Huggers', SF03 six individual figures for £1.00 and a HUGE multipiece Alien Queen, their SF07 Alien Big Mother for £6.00.
