Khurasan Miniatures Previews Warfighter Robot Combatants and VTOL

By Harold

From TMP

Jon from Khurasan Miniatures has previewed renders of his upcoming release of Warfighter Robot Combatants, another great set coming up from KM!

They deploy out of an ARC (armoured robotics carrier) which will be a conversion of the advanced grav tank. So they don't have to hoof it they ride on a SRAM (single user anti-grav mount) the design for which is being tweaked now. There will be poses of both the energy rifle and heavy energy rifle droids riding on the SRAM.
Some of the squad's droids can remain on their SRAMs for patrol and recon purposes.
Of course the ARC can be used for humans too! It's perfect for power armour troopers because it's large.
He's also previewed an awesome VTOL created by PF:

Here's a look at the Frelon (Hornet) VTOL used by the special forces of NOFRA (Nouvelle-France):

You Had the Noodle Dream!

New Terrain From Khurasan Miniatures

By Eli

No, it was no dream, it is really here.

Honestly, this is the terrain bit that I never knew I needed until I saw it. Really this is a superior piece of scenery that has a lot of detail. With a removable roof and full detailed kitchenette, it is every bit as legitimate a piece of wargaming scenery as any building out there. Useful in so many settings and easily a "repeatable" piece I can imagine several variants of this is any sprawl be it post-apocalyptic, distopian future urban or space colony.

Find it HERE.

picture

And while we are at it check out these awesome new paint jobs on the Sepulvedan Provisional Army (SPA) Regulars in Helmets. The original paint jobs made them look cool, but these make them look amazing. Well worth a second look and a place in any collection.

QUICK LOOK: Khurasan Miniatures Federal Security Force Troopers

By Harold

Hi Everyone!

In this installment of Quick Look i'm going to show two product codes from Khurasan Miniatures, the Federal Police officers and the Federal Security forces. Available from: http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/15mmscifi.html  $7.99

These are the same poses as the regular Federal Police but upgraded weaponry and helmets. The pistols appear to have scopes and other tech pieces on them, and the troopers themselves appear to be armed with a baton on their side (maybe a stun stick?).  Included in the pack are more heavily armed security forces armed with the same "Pulse Rifle" as the Exterminators.  I really like this touch, as it adds some nice firepower against trespassers!

I painted on little logos on the arms, I have a vehicles from Rebel Minis that I am using as their transport.  I will be posting a QUICK LOOK of that at a later time. :)

Here is a quick overview of all the different poses in the pack.  It's a nice varied selection.

And here are the Federal Police forces, three are painted as police, the other two are Corp. Security.  The police cruisers are from Khurasan Miniatures as well, and I used sequins (fabulous!) for the light bars.  I'm very happy with these, and they are definitely some of my favorites miniatures!

Clear Horizon (Part Two) - Where it's going

Hey folks,

As promised here is the second part of Harold's awesome guest article on the Shadowrun/5150 project he's been featuring on his Clear Horizon blog. In this installment, he goes into his choice of paint schemes and terrain. I would say the detail he's put into his terrain is every bit as responsible for the brilliant appearance of the project as the vehicles and miniatures.
_______________________________________________________________________

Paint Schemes
Of course, a pile of unpainted lead (pewter and plastic) will not stand.  I need colors.  I actually had stumbled upon my first (yes, I changed my mind and repainted a bunch!) paint scheme.  I needed a wounded “security personnel” marker and had used a NAC casualty marker for the job.  I had painted it in Catachan Green and a foundation yellow color and really warmed up to it.  I later switched out the yellow for a more “realistic” and, I think, better looking dark gray.

The combat cars and tanks ended up with a digital camo scheme.  I actually try to expand my skill set every project I do.  I had gotten out my airbrush and figured out how to make the masking and all the steps to get a really cool digital camo scheme going.  I was amazed how straight-forward it was and even put up a tutorial.  I’ve seen several blogs where people reference that they’ve used that tutorial to good effect. That’s pretty cool.

Since I was trying to emulate the 160th SOAR I painted the VTOLs in a matte black, using a matte varnish to give it a little bit of texture.  Also, lots of decals!  To make sure that the vehicles didn’t look bare it was important to put little doodads and decals to give it some depth.  I also managed to stumble my way into making my own decals, which worked out pretty well and I put my custom logo on most of the vehicles..

Terrain
With my Shadowrun/5150 project I had started building a city that I could use to run my games in.  I had always admired the World Works Games products, but never felt that I had enough patience to actually put paper models together.  Especially since they were designed for 28mm, although I knew that I could scale them down.  Then I happened to stumble upon the Streets of Legend.  It wasn’t very expensive and the only “putting together” that I would have to do is to cut out tiles.  I ended up purchasing and downloading the PDF and set about building up my city.

I actually put up another quick tutorial since I found that cork tiles worked the best for me in terms of storage and use.  I simply printed out the city street tiles at the normal size (since it worked just fine for me scale-wise) and then super-glued them onto the cork tiles.  Pretty soon I had a slightly larger than 2x2 board.

I used the excellent apartment buildings from Old Crow games (small and large) and the “Russian” apartment buildings from MBA that I got on sale a while back.  The MBA buildings are really cool since they split in two and become two ruined pieces. I added a HO scale lighted sign, printed out little posters and collect bits and pieces from HO scenery sets to really add some detail.

I also picked up the crates and boxes set from GZG (which work GREAT as cover) and the various furniture and dumpster sets from Khurasan miniatures.  I feel having all the details really add a lot, and you don’t need a whole lot to make a visual impact.

I also use the GZG colony set (which is very versatile) as little shanties.  My other board is a frontier planet colony and the GZG shacks work great there too.  I use cheap vinyl floor tiles that are 1’ x 1’ as a quick desert landscape.

I haven’t had a chance to game on these boards yet.  Honestly, the building, painting and collecting is the major part of the fun for me.  I always build a force rules-wise first though since that gives me a good guideline when collecting, although the “rule of cool” always wins!    I am currently waiting for 1.1v of the Gruntz rules to be released (soon!) and then we’ll start playing some games!

Conclusion
I hope I’ve shown the basics of how my project came together.  I am always on the lookout for cool things to paint and cool systems to play.  I like having a continuous narrative and believable consistency.

In the end it truly is about having a good time and being creative and that is what has kept me in the hobby for more than 22 years now.  And it’s amazing how much every day the breadth of the hobby grows, even with computer games and all the other distractions of modern life, more and more people go back to the lead miniature and paintbrush.

Khurasan Miniatures Exclusive - The Infected Apocalyptic Post-Humans!

Here's an exclusive preview from Jon at Khurasan Miniatures. These are the Infected, for Khurasan's End Times post-apocalyptic range.  These are the degenerate descendants of humans, infected by a virus which turned them into horrible savage cannibals! Apparently the Infected are born with a virus which gives them enhanced senses, strength and an unquenchable taste for human flesh!

I can just see them ambushing human travellers on The Road, or besieging isolated survivor communes scraping out an existence in the rubble of some small town in the post-disaster US! Other possible uses include primitive fighters from another world, alternative dark elf types, Morlocks for Victorian Sci Fi / Space 1889, Talislanta Thralls, or maybe even Firefly Reavers!

There are six Infected poses, and the greens are at the casters now...

15mm Releases Roundup

These items have been released in the last few weeks. Since the new crew was still figuring out how to fly Dropship Horizon, we weren't able to give these minis the fanfare they really deserved. But they still deserve a mention, so here we go:

Rebel Minis CATs (Cybernetic Autonomous Troopers)

Releases from Rebel Minis:
  • Cyber Autonomous Troopers (CATs) in two different models. The Wild CATs have power claws and missile launchers, while the Tom CATs are equipped for close assault.
  • Post Apocalyptic Riders - very reminiscent of films like The Postman.

Khurasan Miniatures Yozhik Heavy APC

Releases from Khurasan Miniatures:
Previews From Highlander Studios
  • Support weapons for their popular Z-Cubed Space Bugs
  • 15mm Space Pals (you'll understand when you see them)
  • Space: 1889 Mars Expeditionary Force test sculpts
Combat Wombat has unveiled his new line of turned-brass gun barrels, as well as releasing the Swingfire Anti-Tank GEV.

For all you starship gamers out there... ClearHorizon has released a set of control consoles on Shapeways.

Copplestone Castings has previewed a set of 15mm Fantasy Barbarians. While fantasy gaming certainly isn't the focus of this blog, we know that fantasy minis are sometimes useful as primitives in varying-tech scenarios. You can expect us to highlight a few fantasy ranges when they catch our eyes.

I apologize if I missed anyone's releases from the last few weeks!

Cheers,
Chris

Pizza Base Aliens

.

We had a cinema night last night. A full-blown Chinese take out followed by ALIENS: The Directors Cut. Damn! It's still a great movie.

To my mind the best role in the film is Hudson, played by Bill "How do I get out of this Chickenshit outfit" Paxton. Hudson has some of the best lines in the movie and his anti-hero character gets to take the audience on a one-man emotional roller coaster from being cocksure wise cracker, to competent com-tech, scaredy "you can count me out"  'villain' to when he finally redeems himself as "state of the badass art".

So, I must make more of gaming Aliens, well, more Aliens vs Colonial Marines, whether in 15mm or 20mm. Jon at Khurasan has some more new(ish) menacing poses for his Space Demons that I must buy.

TC901A Space Demon  Assault Warriors (textured head)
TC903A Space Demon Infiltrator Warriors (smooth dome head - not shown)

I also came across this photo (below), which made me think - hang on, there's a really good room and corridor design hidden in there for 'pizzabase' gaming.

Sure there's little real logic to the layout, but why does there have to be? Do I really need crew quarters, state rooms and the like? No! Think "Ambush Aliens", a labyrinth of infiltration routes, fire lanes and hidden corners. In true Mass Effect style, the larger open spaces can be altered with crates and containers to provide additional cover, impenetrable walls and ad hoc corridors.

 Mass Effect 2: N7 Hahne-Kedar Facility

I have a good selection of crates and containers from Jon at GZG, but I think I need to add a pack of Antenociti Workshops G.O.T. Secure Crates. These have a definite Mass Effect feel.

The fight in the Hahne-Kedar Facility is one of my favourite side-quest missions in ME2. It's a straight firefight between yourself and 2 companions against up to 40 combat androids amongst a maze of crates and containers. You continually have to keep pushing forward to stop the avalanche of robots spawning from their storage/shipping containers.... but it has to be timed right, between each wave and you need to maximise use of cover, shieid regeneration and firepower.

 That's next weekend's project sorted.

Cheers

INCOMING...... New Jellina and Lily 6 15mm characters from Khurasan

.
A year ago I said to Jon, "Look mate, I would like to see your 28mm Angelina Jolie'esque Genocidal Overlord figure in 15mm as you simply can't have enough leather clad heroines".

Back in March of this year, whilst snow and floods lay siege at our door and my lungs looked like they were going to give their last puff, Jon the Punxsutawney Phil of 15mm Sci Fi, brought an early end to this "winter"" when he emailed me with the greens of this superb new 15mm Jellina Jo-eli I character figure.

The sculpting is simply breathtaking in it's understated simplicity and more in keeping with a 75mm miniature than one in 15mm. I think Jellina will make a great starship commander in the mould of Helena Cain, rogue Peacekeeper a la Aeryn Sun or Soviet WWW2 heroine.

Khurasan Miniatures 15mm Sci Fi: Jellina Jo-eli I
TTC-1901: Villains of the Sepulvedan Control Forces
(Jellina and Lily6) Jellina pictured above.

Accompanying Angelina, sorry, Jellina, is female super assassin for hire Lily6, a dynamic and energetic miniature that easily equals similar Sci Fi martial arts figures in the outstanding 28mm Infinity range.

What I like about Lily6, is that she also carries small arms which makes her a very versatile gaming miniature, especially for old goats like me who prefer figures of the wysiwyg school.

A real treat coming home to find these miniatures available from Khurasan. Look out for further characters in the pipeline.

IN THE PIPE... whats coming in 2010 from Khurasan Miniatures

.
Happy New Year
to everyone from Jon at Khurasan Miniatures!

Jon has sent me a snapshot of what's going on at the Khurasan foundrywerkz in order that I don't commit to making rash New Year resolutions before knowing what's on the way in 2010!

1) Mantis Stalkers are to be released NEXT, painter to work on them this week

2) Felid second batch (two line troops, two Heavy Weapons) are sculpted and on their way to
Jon.

3) Space Demon Colossus and Nymphs are at painters.

4) Alien Hunter is having final details sculpted - Billy:"There's something out there waiting for us, and it ain't no man. We're all gonna die".

5) Sculptor working on the basic troops for the Sepulvedan (Human) Resistance. Think Eastern Europe - woolly hats, chest rigs - that sort of thing.

6) The Sepulvedan 'Technical' (armed truck) crew is being cast.

7) The castings of the Evil Warbots have just arrived and about to go to painter.

8) Corporate Marine L-HAC is sculpted and printed and on its way to the caster

9) Corporate Marine APC, an anti-grav/wheeled hybrid, will be sculpted this
month, I'm pretty sure

10) Orca Assault Troopers you know about ...

11) JBR has finished the Garn Battle Barge, both the Alligator
Class Combat Transport and the Crocodile Class Heavy Escort. (These are Federation designations, the Garn call them something completely indecipherable.) One Croc accompanies two Gators in assaults. The Croc has three turrets!

12) Mike Broadbent is making the Vespulids

13) Corporate Marine Power Armour variants being sculpted from dollies.

14) Chewks being sculpted -- More about the Chewks in a separate post, where I'll introduce them fully as it is quite a substantial range.

Cracking! 2010 is going to be a fun year for Sci Fi from Khurasan Miniatures and I haven't got round to telling you about the Cinematic Sci Fi releases....

Whilst Jon would like to provide some sort of release schedule, he is quite rightly saying, look this is what's in the pipe and I don't want to disappoint people if timescales slip and projects need to be pushed back or reprioritised.

Plenty to look forward to! The Mantis Stalkers and Felids are at the top of my list.

Thanks for the headsup Jon!

Quick Parasachnid Conversion

.
This is a great mini-diorama, it's a shame Jon doesn't sell a resin landscaped base as an extra for the drop-pod.

Despite the fact it would reduce the versatility of the drop-pod, I'm certainly tempted to make up 3-4 mini dioramas like this for my tabletop.

Whilst on the subject of Parasachnids - these little beauties come in two parts - body and legs, all 4 being cast in one-piece. The body has a ball joint that allows a small degree of variation when mounting on the legs - so your Parasachnids aren't regimented.

Now, the four legs basic Parasachnid is fine, but you know, it doesn't scare me! So messing around with the pack, I mounted one set of legs ontop of the other, popped the body on top and voila! "Uhh, actually, it's kind of like champagne that way"..... the 'spider' Parasachnid!

Eight legs and tons of teeth!

Critical Mass Games
15mm Sci Fi Protolenes
Available 23rd November 2009

Critical Mass Games Protolenes (Left)
Khurasan Miniatures Felids (right)

Critical Mass Games Protolene Khanate figure compatability
with other leading 15mm Sci Fi ranges

For more details of the Protolene Hunters click here
For more details of the Protolene Predators click here
For more details of the Protolene Scouts click here

What's the difference between the Protolene troops types as far as the miniatures themselves are concerned?
  • The Scouts are in light armour and have rifles and heavy weapons.
  • The Hunters are in heavy armour and likewise have rifles and heavy weapons.
  • The Predators have heavy armour, pistols and in some instances power claws.
My own plans for using the Protolenes are
  • Protolene 'army' (both regulars and rebels)
  • Sci Fi Egyptian subject 'army'
  • Merc scouts in Human forces
  • Allied/subject race in a combined Felid/Protolene 'army'
  • Individual characters, Mercs, Pirates & Bounty Hounters in character skirmish games.

Khurasan Miniatures: 15mm Pelagic SEA WASP

.
I want to introduce you to one of my favourite models at the moment. The 15mm Khurasan Miniatures Pelagic Sea Wasp.

Khurasan Miniatures 15mm Sci Fi
Pelagic Sea Wasp

Khurasan TTC-1001 Corporate Marine for comparison

The Sea Wasp is a small Grav 'flyer' that matches the design concepts of Jon's Pelagic 'Man o' War' series Grav Tank and Grav APC.

The model comes on a sprue with a selection of three 'turret options'. A twin laser turret, a remote grenade launcher, and a disk shaped attachment (radar/sensors?). The pack also contains a metal base. The photo below shows upper and lower detail of the main model with a Khurasan TTC-1001 Corporate Marine for comparison. Jon expects the price to be $4.29, but this is still to be confirmed.

This is a small, dinky Grav flyer that has a myriad of game uses. In it's conventional role, it deserves to be deployed on the table in 'squadrons' rather than as a single unique model.

It's perfect as an Alien or even High-tech Human 'Flyer' in Alien Squad Leader but I think the Sea Wasp will also make a great high velocity 'escape pod', so I plan to use one as a crashed 'objective' marker within a variety of scenarios.

But mostly, I want to give the Sea Wasps an alternative role as 'rapid re-entry' stealth drop 'pods' used by Sci Fi Special Operations Forces such as Rebel Minis' Infiltrator miniatures. Imagine a Merville Battery style scenario, where Infiltrators are landing on top of a planetary defence battery to effect maximum surprise and disable the generators before the main orbital assault.

Latest Intel.......Khurasan Miniatures Vespulid Swarm

.
These predatory sentients live in teeming hives dominated by a hierarchy of queens, from the lowest commanders, the sub-queens, to the greatest Vespulid of the swarm, the Queen of Queens. They are a space faring race and infest planets by means of their nest-ships. Often their most terrific battles are between rival hives. Vespulids are the only known natural predators of Space Demons.

The small arm of the Soldiers, the ion shotgun, is a deadly weapon and its ionized particle blast can even disable heavy armoured vehicles, but has an extremely short effective range. In order to close the range quickly the Soldiers hurtle toward the enemy wearing rocketpacks, dodging defensive fire then swarming the foe. If it comes to close combat, the Vespulids are prepared, having vicious mandibles and a highly toxic poison stinger with enough venom to kill a human in moments.

The line will have about seven poses of Soldiers and a sub-queen commander. The extremely talented Pierre Francois Jacquet has agreed to make the models. The line won't be available for a while, but we thought you'd like to see the concept art.

If any models will every cry out for being painted black and yellow, it is these!

Jon

New Khurasan Miniatures Pelagic Drop Pod

.
The Pelagic Dominate make full use of biological terror weapons in seizing other worlds. They mainly take the form of various space horrors - bred, transported, corralled into drop pods before being launched in their tens of thousands on unsuspecting planets. On the ground, the drop pods spring open to unleash the terrors and spread confusion and panic amongst defenders and civilians alike.

Khurasan Miniatures 15mm Sci Fi
Pelagic Dominate Drop Pod
$3.99 each (provisional - to be confirmed)

The Drop Pod comes as a two part kit - base, which represents the landed and open pod and the central column, with a small remote auto-cannon.

An amazing amount of detail is present on both the top and bottom of the drop pod. This allows you to model the pod in crashed or semi open condition - if you want to go to that amount of work.

The Drop pod measures 6x6cm and stands 30mm tall with the central column in place.

I have a couple of these Drop Pods already because I thought they would be immensely useful to mark the extent of drop zones and represent infantry drop pods regardless of their physical size on the tabletop.

I've only recently read that Ridley Scott is in talks to do a new Aliens movie, this time with Predators dropping the Aliens on Earth in drop pods. You've got to admit that Jon at Khurasan is ahead of the wave! - I can already see the Ambush Alley or similar scenarios where the Drop Pods land on present day Earth creating 'hotspots' out of which come tumbling the Khurasan Space Demons!
