"How long after we're declared overdue......."

The centrepiece of my Post Apocalyptic urban terrain arrived today from Fieldworks and let me tell you, it is AWESOME. I have to take my hat off to John at Fieldworks, this model exceeded my expectations by miles!

It is a shell damaged C20th or later two storey raised building sitting on pillars. The second storey and all roofs are removable. Perfect as a Hiroshima style solitary survivor in a glassed urbanscape or the abandoned command and research centre on LV-426b.

The model arrived in a HUGE, well packaged box, that included a small bag with 40p in change as a refund on postage! Heather said "Ooh, Aliens!" as soon as I took the model out from the layers of bubblewrap. And yes, I can easily see heroic Marines making last stands in the corridors.

The piece itself is £18, which I think is staggeringly good value. Painted it's £27 and you know, wish I'd gone for that option!

MasterChef has just picked one up for himself. You can imagine, two of these, some GZG containers, a couple of Colony Prefab Modules..... plus hordes of Khurasan Space Demons!

In The Valley of the Shadow of the Bomb

Jon tells me that the first pack of Khurasan Miniatures 'Human Resistance' will be available in a couple of weeks. Initially the rifles pack whilst the command set will follow a little later. Eagerly looking forward to both these packs as I'm sure they will make great looking armed survivors as well as 15mm Balkan militia proxies.

QRF's forthcoming Modern ANP figures in caps, beards and parkas will also make good survivalist militia or home guard. Something very 'Postman' (1997) about them? No? The poses are nicely subdued without being static or too stiff.

Master Chef gave me some Rebel Minis Fedayeen and I've since been wondering how to work them into my Post-Apocalyptic games - the 'Crowman's' snatch squad perhaps? - Who is the 'Crowman'? Baddie Warlord that I designed whilst on the train this week and am coverting right now. I'll come back to them - in the meantime Mike's Armed Gunmen are a better bet for me!

Worth mentioning perhaps that Flashpoint Minis have just released a pack of Iraqi Insurgents - as Shemagh's are a de rigeur post apocalyptic fashion statement! A little conversion or even just a good paintjob, will turn them into more post-apoc Jundies.

I try to love Flashpoint, but those crazy leg poses remind me of a young Forrest Gump dancing in his leg braces for Elvis! Having got that off my chest "Why thank you very much!", I do like that 'leader' miniature with raised arm, but is one miniature worth buying a pack for?.....No. Time to look again at Mickey Yarrow's Iraqi Insurgents.

What about Peter Pig?.....Well I'm initially trying to establish a dystopian urban nuclear winter post apoc feel, and I think only 2 of the minis in each of the Arab/PLO Command and Crew packs really come close to achieving that. other minis in the AK47 Range in this instance require a lot of conversion work. To be honest there are more suitable miniatures for post-apoc games out there worthy of that effort.

You may notice there's a bias here towards AK47s. Well "when you absolutely, positively have to shoot every....." you know!

It's All Gone A Bit Apocalyptic!

I'm rested and recharged after a few days away from the emotional Ground Zero back at the office. I'm ready to crack on with some gaming projects and get the painting/modelling momentum going again.

To maximise my creative energy I've decided to give March a theme. With work going to hell in a handcart, returning to the office to find everyone in 'Viggo Mortensen mode' nothing could be more apt right now at this time than surviving the Apocalypse!

You want a finger to point - blame Shawn's WASTELAND scenario pack for this, as it has helped me visualise how to bring satisfying post-apocalyptic games to the tabletop without going down the hackneyed Mad Max or al mutante atómico route. Except that I really enjoyed Six String Samurai (1998) - Elvis really is KING, in a Mad Max meets The Wizard of Oz, but with swords. And guitars, kind of way.

I have some crazy ideas - some will work, some won't, but they may work for you. You'll see me putting together a new Post-Apocalyptic urban board, which will also get well used for alien invasions and futuristic urban gruntfests.

Plus, if you've been following the blog, you'll know that I've really enjoyed doing headswops. I want to extend my skillbase, and now I have a good stock of GZG's separate heads (SG15-XH1 and XH2) , expect a ream of converted figures over the coming days and weeks. These will all end up in the collective pot as various survivors, 'Jundies', resistance or militia in my future Sci Fi games.

Oh, and there will be a special guest star appearance in 15mm!
