The Apocalypse is.......well, depressing really

.
Heather 'gets' my love of Zombie movies - especially when the 'Dyce' and 'Laurencekirk' trains arrive at Aberdeen at the same time, one platform apart and close to 500 commuters turn into a seething horde as they shuffle through 5 ticket gates.

She doesn't share my interest in post nuclear apocalypse and after watching THE ROAD (2009),  probably THE most depressing movie ever seen, I don't blame her.

Yup, great for mood, some terrain ideas, but makes THE POSTMAN (1997) or JERICO (TV) as grungy and apocalyptic as PRETTY IN PINK (1986).

Think I'll have to watch THE SHINING now for some light relief!

Cheers

  1. And the book is much bleaker and more depressing than the movie. As I read it I continually went in to check on my three kids to make sure they were safe, although the whole point of the book is that there is precious little we can do in that circumstance to really safeguard ourselves or our loved ones.

The book makes you feel haunted for days after reading it. To label it as genre fiction is really to misunderstand it. It's an amazing achievement.

  2. Don't try the book, it's harder. I'm gonna watch the blob with Steve Mc Queen.

  3. Aye ... one almost understands why the original won a Pulitzer ... :( My GF and I couldn't sit it through. If I'm in a mood for dark post apoc, then I prefer the kids out of the (harm's) way, like in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or HL2.

  5. Very insightful Jon. No denying it's a powerful story with a message that's unequivocable.

  7. You obviously have not seen "On The Beach". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053137/

While the graphic depiction in The Road may be more "startling" to viewers, knowing that the end is coming is far more frightening than the reality and trying to survive it.
