"Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off".
So, you have a chance to remake ALIEN (1979). Who is your Ripley?
For me? It's working mom Bridget Moynahan who makes Sum Of All Fears and I Robot so very watchable. There's a certain Ripley vive going on there. Of course you may want to 'reimagine' Ripley, the movie or both. But let's keep it classic if we can.....

Sigourney Weaver was only 30 at the time, so with that as a rough guideline, and the character I would go one of 2 ways:
ReplyDelete1. Jennifer Connelly. She'd be great if you want to show more about the character finding an unknown inner strength to deal with the threat. I think she could pull that off well. or
2. Katee Sackhoff. If you want to leave no doubt that she's got what it takes to meet the alien threat and want a more straight forward approach, though I think she could act the range as well, her well known role as Starbuck may carry with it too much baggage of people wondering if the Alien even stands a chance.
I'd like to see either one of those movies.
Christina Cox who played the Merc Eve logan in Chronicles of Riddick
ReplyDeleteLisa Vidal from The Event.
Diane Lane from Judge Dredd.
Diane Lane is getting on a bit. My vote for Claudia Black. Not classically hot, a believable but attractive looking character.
ReplyDeleteI liked Christina Cox in Riddick too. She'd be great as a new movie Sarah Connor.
ReplyDeleteJennifer Connolly, of course! superb in Blood Diamond. She would have been great in Inception.
Diane Lane - getting on a bit? she's younger than me! Superceded as Judge Hershey by Olivia Thirlby:

Claudia Black - yeah definitely fits the Ripley mould.

How about Sandra Bullock? Then the remake could be a comedy in the vein of Demolition man.
ReplyDeleteThe script for aliens gives no particular gender to any of the characters, they all acted it out in an androgenous style...my choice...I don´t think that Sigourney Weaver can be bettered but if I had to choose it would be Milla Jovovich.

Interesting question. I really hope they don't remake Alien, though. The 1970's-gritty space feel is so much of what makes that film special. The cast is the rest: I really can't picture anyone but HD Stanton and Yaphet Kotto griping about shares, or anyone but Ian Holm trying to kill Ripley with a magazine.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I'll be a smart ass and say Ellen Page. Just because I think she has a lot of potential, and more than a passing resemblance to Sigourney Weaver.
Bridget..perfect! I thought i was her only fan!
ReplyDeleteNow Ellen Page in Inception, especially the snow fortress scene, reminded me of a younger Jennifer Connolly.
ReplyDeleteSorry Commanderroj, you've got competition! LOL!

When I first heard of an Alien re-imaged, I immediately hoped Ellen Page would be selected as Ripley. She's got the right attitude, the right vibe, the right look. She's definitely got the talent and she really needs to break out of the 'teen/young adult' roles once and for all.
ReplyDeleteMy second choice would be Grace Park. An atypical choice perhaps, but I think she would give a killer performance as a reimaged Ripley.
