Force on Force: Free Form Campaign

Still undergoing tests for my collapse at work, so it's been quietly distracting this week to be able to reach for Osprey Publishing's new Force on Force and just dip into the pages.

The free-form campaign rules included within Force on Force have me hooked. Small scale, simple, encourage play and feed results straight back into the next game. Reminiscent of FAD v4. I played them campaign through on paper a couple of times and found it reminded me of the excerpt from "War" by Sebastian Junger I read last summer in one of the saturday broadsheets.

as a result created the small break away province of Slavikova within Eli's Crisis in Alcovia blog. Where the militias have taken over and the region needs to be brought back under control.

What I particularly like is the fact that there's no one size fits all approach. The campaign can be played from either a "regular" or insurgent perspective, where you get to build the insurgency through your military prowess on the battlefield. Needless to say, lot's of potential for a Ghost Recon style campaign, chronicling the headaches of Starshina Grojny and his Motor Rifle Platoon, plus near future, post apocalypse and military orientated Fi settings.

Cheers

  1. TFL's platoon forward is another mini campaign system that fits with all .... Personally i don't rate FonF .... its too similar to stargrunt and its obsession with wounded figures does my nut :-(

  2. I did something similar to Platoon Forward years ago that's free on a Yahoo Group somewhere.

I've been expanding FoFs campaign system on the train in the mornings, with house rules built around a mini campaign setting in Eli's "Crisis in Alcovia" blog.

Oh sod it, I'll just blog up some of wht we've been doing.....

  3. I just meant to add, reading 3 Para Helmund. There's a great passage describing the anatomy of a firefight. If you write or are thinking of writing rules this is an important passage to read beacuse firefights are not about figure A having a 5.56mm this or that with a range of bhah and a penetration factor of X.

Anyway, it decsribed this firefight in the boonies and it was interesting how the whole focus of the battle changed when a man went down. A sergeant charged with taking control of casualty evacuation winds into action....

FoF isnt going to be everyone's brew and admittedly we are only using the bits we want - blatantly adding in our own stuff when it suits.
