Brigade Models - New Scenery and Weapons

Some awesome new stuff from the folks at Brigade Models. Continuing with their growing 15mm science fiction scenery range they add a new, raised colonial housing structure along with some new weapon emplacements.

Some houses in the desert wastelands are built up on high plinths to keep them safe from predators – this is one such design, accessed by a single stairway to a raised platform. This new 15mm building is available today.

I’ve also been tinkering with some of our recent releases, combining them with other parts to see what I could come up with. In particular, the new Fasolini tracked gun units have all sorts of possibilities. I’ve added a missile launcher and radar dish to the tracked base to create mobile anti-tank and comms systems, as well as a 5-barrel gatling weapon, known as the Lucane (Stag Beetle) family. I’ve also put the single-barrel gun on a ground mount to create a light AA gun (the quad gun was unfortunately a bit too big to fit the base and overbalances). These are listed under the EuroFed.

One of the most popular 15mm building sets we’ve come out with has been the Research Base. Possibly because it’s a very versatile design that will stand in as a military barracks, PoW or prison camp or general purpose civilian huts. Today we have a new addition to the base, a double hut connected by a central corridor – in other words, an H-Block. In its original guise as a cold weather research base it means that the occupants can move from hut to hut without stepping outside in the cold, which has to be a good thing !

New Modular Terrain Top Mounts From The Ion Age

Hello all you dropship passengers out there,

The folks at The Ion Age have been at it again and have released a third set of op mounts for their successful modular terrain system. This new set brings five new turrets that will fit the Hab Dome, Block House, Command Dome and Tower modules. What's more, if you leave off the bottom ring, they will also fit on the landing pad, making them truly universal throughout the rangeo f terrain modules.

In my opinion, one of the really nice things about these and the other top mounts from this range is that the way they are constructed allows them to be used in other terrain setups as well. The standardized mounting sizes and the flat bottom arrangements means you can work them into your own customer terrain or even build simple mounts for them to operate as emplacement weapons.

Battlefield in a Box : River Bends

Unless that is you've purchased a Battlefield in a Box river set from Battlefront.

If like me you've been humming and havering about the boxed river sets from Battlefront, I thought yesterday that you might appreciate a review whilst I had a camera handy.

I purchased the Battlefront Battlefield in a Box – River Expansion: Bends (#BB514) from Maelstrom Games for £13.50 - normal RRP £15.00. Choosing this boxed set deliberately over and above the main Battlefield in a Box River set (#BB105) because I only need three feet of river and don't want two overpriced and quite frankly, ugly model bridges.

What do you get in this box then? 3x 30cm meandering painted rubber river sections and the tiniest bag of bright green flock you will ever come across.

Each river section comes painted and has earth and rock detail moulded onto the banks. The river itself is 60mm wide whilst including the banks, the sections are 95mm wide overall. The rubber used is flexible without being bendy and quite durable at 3mm thick across the width of the river and 5mm thick at the banks.


You can see from the photos that the banks are painted in a flat khaki earth tone. You can leave this as is, enhance with drybrushing or paint/flock to match your gaming board and a small bag of 'summer' green flock is included. The river itself comes painted an 'Ultramarine Blue' with pale blue currents as accents - it's definitely a satin finish rather than glossy as shown in the box art.


The river sections join together perfectly, sit flat on the game surface and are flexible enough to follow slight variations in the playing surface.

Value for money? Three 300x95mm river sections for £15.00 (RRP) from Battlefront vs 5 x 300x50mm very straight flexible rubber river sections from LKM/QRF for £18.00, or 4 x 300x55mm painted straight resin river sections from Terrain Warehouse at £16.00. Not an exact comparison but it demonstrates that the price is roughly comparable with other products on the market.

To sum up, I like the fact that this is an attractive, robust product that can be taken out of the box and put straight on the table with no extra effort, but also that it has plenty of potential for extra detailing as whim and free time allow.

Post Apocalyptic Outpost - WIP

Here is some more post apocalypse scenery I've been working on. This 'outpost' was started a week or so ago and I must give full credit to the Black Primer Paint blog which inspired me to try this in 15mm:


I've been waiting on several packs of 15mm Damaged Oil Drums from Mike at The Scene to add more interest to the base. Now they're here, I'll crack on and hopefully get it finished this week, using the remainder of the barrels to create a couple of bases of scatter terrain.

I intend keeping a pack or two of these damaged oil drums available in my bits box for future projects as they are incredibly handy, especially at that price!

I've also made a start on some piles of damaged/scrapped cars - see above - without which no post apocalypse wasteland is complete.

IN THE PIPE... Pole Bitwy 15mm Desert Dwellings

Piotr of Pole Bitwy has sent me photos of his soon to be released Desert Dwellings. Breaking away from the traditional square or oblong shaped desert buildings Dan (aka Cacique Caribe) are great for deserts on far off worlds.


As you can see in this photo below, just three models make for a very interesting little settlement on Arakis, Tatooine or similar.


The Desert Dwellings will be available shortly and I will keep you updated on release date and costs.
