NACHT DER UNTOTEN 15mm style!

.

I've been playing Call of Duty: World at War Zombies on the train home in the evening this week. Had a blast with this and want to recreate the feel of these games in 15mm. So, I need some appropriate 15mm WW2 US troops to beat off my Rebel Minis Nazi Zombies.

A WIP photo from January

I was hoping the latest WW2 US releases from Flames of War including the Devils Brigade and Late War Assault Platoon would supply some cool miniatures - only find that they are essentially just repackaged and rebadged versions of previous miniature releases - with the odd new fig thrown in. All very much 'emperors new clothes'.

The 'fluff' on the FOW website for the Assault Platoon platoon says "They were specially trained in reducing enemy strong points and bunkers using demolitions, bangalore torpedoes, and flame throwers." Not so much fluff as 'fluffing' as there is not one demolitions, bangalore torpedo or flame thrower figure in the pack, but instead several guys on their knees with entrenching tools. Which reminds me of a sketch from Eddie Izzard's Definite Article live show.... "I got done for assault, and I was running away! Assault is motion towards, I feel… it takes an accusative".

Not the first time FOW has badged one guy with a shovel, three guys buying newspapers, four walking the dog and six weeding the lawn as an assault pioneer platoon or similar.

So we turn to Peter Pig, who have some really laudable WW2 ETO American Infantry. My favourites from the range and absolutely perfect for fighting Nazi Zombies are Pack 60: US with SMGs.

This pack just hits the button with some classic US soldiers in great poses which ooze character. Plus, the figures really look comfortable and experienced holding and using their weapons - not always true of Pig but more so with the many of the recent sculpts. But this can be said of and is often worse with other manufacturers lines. Anyhoo....a couple of the carbine troops, the LMG being carried and fired at the waist and we are done - ready for NACHT DER UNTOTEN 15mm style!

The video above from the XBOX360 game will give you a flavour of the game action. The iPhone version is subtely different, with more of a bunker setting than ruined farmhouse and much more claustrophobic as a result.

"Oh my God. Ze Gas Mask Bandits!"

.
Told you I was having fun! Peter Pig WW2 Pack 285: Russians in greatcoat with SMG given that retro Sov-Block 'Kolony' Rebel look with a GZG gasmask separate head.

Just a rough 5 minute job to see if it works. Peter Pig 15mm are exactly what they say on the tin - mostly that is - a few ranges, such as the modern USMC are bigger. This means that side by side with Rebel Minis, GZG, Critical Mass Games, these P.Pig Soviets are noticably smaller, though not at all when a couple of inches away from each other on the tabletop.

The new GZG separate heads though , are not surprisingly on the larger side, so they won't work in every instance - but the gasmask heads do! And, because they ARE just that bit larger than the P.Pig figure, the whole distopian effect is enhanced.

Peter Pig also offer a range of WW2 Germans in greatcoat which includes MP44 assault rifles, Panzerfausts, Soviet SMGs. Many of these and some of the Germans in 'Zeltbahn', could be potentials for the 'Kolony' treatment.

15mm Vargr Mercenary Conversion

GZG 15mm New Israeli 'leader' body
with Beast Wolf Head from Peter Pig

Still very much a work in progress. Before you ask.....why yellow combat enviroment armour? Not only did I want to paint something radically different to blue! But it's believed wolves can only sense red and yellow. So, as a Vargr Merc commander, Grav'RR bought himself a distinguished yellow battlesuit. Unfortunately, like his rifle, it's seen better days, better battles.

The head is greyer in actuality than it appears in the photo - probably due to the Citadel Devlann Mud Wash. I still need to sort the Vargr's eyes to my satisfaction though.

His troopers are going to be painted in Citadel Shadow Grey (almost similar to RAF grey-blue), possibly with Black & Codex Grey tiger stripes.

VSF: NEW Peter Pig Sudan Highlanders

Whilst perusing Mr Peter Pig's finest miniatures on the ether web, I came across a truly astounding new dicovery obscurated amongst their cornucopia of merchandise...... miniature toy soldiers of the finest quality representing Highlanders have appeared this very week in Messr Pig's Patrols in the Sudan range.

15mm Highland Infantry Advancing
Pack 22/82, £2.30 for 8 infantry
from Peter Pig

15mm Highland Command
Pack 22/83, £2.30 for 8 infantry
from Peter Pig

At bloody last I have a decent reason to finish my 15mm Sudan collection, conduct punitive expeditions against the Pathan and make Mars the ruby of Her Imperial Britannic Majesty's crown.

Now, anyone interested in 15mm VSF, or alternatively wants to reenact the Sinking of The Titanic, should seriously consider Peter Pig's Naval ships crew, Pack 22/61.

"Iceberg dead ahead Skipper...."
"Hoover Dam! Smile and wave boys. Smile and wave"

There's a nice retro Sci Fi feel about these figures that could make them useful as a luxury cruise liner crew like those on Fhlotsin Paradise in The Fifth Element. Yes?

Walking The Dog

George out walking his dog

In this case, it's a Star Wars Titanium Series AT-ST by Hasbro, £5.95 from my local Forbidden Planet. 70mm tall and 35mm wide at the 'hips' it makes an excellent 15mm support weapon or AFV in it's own right. Go on, you're itching to paint George plus his UNSC buddies white and call them Stormtroopers now aren't you!

Here's my Titanium Series AT-ST's in a 'Benghazi or Bust' Weird WWII game. Herr Leutnant Clumpf's band of hardcore Peter Pig 15mm DAK raiders, storm Monty's HQ.
